G20 Summit
- London was home to the G20 summit on 2nd April, 2009. Leaders from 21 countries and 9 International organisations reached the destination to carry out discussions and reach a collective conclusion on the global financial crisis.Couple of days before the summit started, London witnessed violent and angry protesters showing their displeasure with governmental policies with regard to financial crisis and climate change, and urging leaders to take action.
These two videos describe the mood of some peaceful protesters at Trafalgar Square, London. They were showing their anger against the war in Gaza and Obama’s Afghanistan policy.
In the following video, the protesters started singing as well…
The next day, i.e, 2nd April, 2009, it was finally time for the world leaders to meet and reach a decision on a global reform. I packed my bags early in the morning and left for the summit. I tweeted all the way, until I reached the centre, after which I started blogging.
2600 journalists had been accredited for the summit. The media centre was as big as a football ground. Infact, the following video describes the atmosphere…
Once the summit meeting was over, it was time for press conferences. The first press conference was addressed by British PM Gordon Brown.
PM Brown mentioned that the world leaders have come together to fight the current crisis..
PM Brown also mentioned the decision to take actions against tax havens
PM Brown, in context of IMF, said the member countries have decided to contribute money towards increasing the funds of IMF. This fund will be directed towards poorer countries to fight financial crisis.
The second and final press conference I attended was the one addressed by U.S President Barrack Obama. He swept the crowd with his enigmatic personality and took every question that came his way confidently.
He mentioned the need to maintain financial stability…
President Obama’s answer to a Chinese journalist who said Obama should not play local politics in G20.
And finally, an Indian journalist asked President Obama about the outcome of his meeting with the Indian PM in regard to counter terrorism emanating from Pakistan.
President Obama started his answer with a praise for the Indian PM. He said India should be proud of Dr. Manmohan Singh who is not only guiding India as a PM but has been an important part of its economic policies since a long time. He also mentioned that the two countries will spend more time discussing terrorism issues.
